What we believe

The values that guide everything we do

Medela isn't just a tutoring service. It's built on a set of beliefs about how children learn, and how families should be supported.

🌱

Every child can grow

We've never met a child who can't make progress. The question is always how — not whether. Every child has a learning profile; our job is to understand it.

🧩

Learning is personal

There's no one-size approach here. What works for one child might not work for another. Every programme at Medela is built specifically around the individual learner.

💛

Confidence comes first

Many of the children we work with have been told — in some way — that they're not clever. Our first job is always rebuilding that relationship with themselves.

🤝

Parents are partners

We keep parents closely involved. You know your child better than anyone. Our job is to bring the expertise — your job is to bring the context.

📚

Evidence drives everything

Becs' methods are grounded in educational therapy research. We don't follow trends — we follow what the evidence says actually works for children with learning differences.

🏡

Community matters

Navigating a learning difference can feel isolating. That's why Aldeia exists — because parents shouldn't have to figure this out alone.

How we work

A methodology built around the child

Medela's four-step process ensures every child gets a programme that's right for them — and that families always know what's happening and why.

1

Initial conversation

We start with a free 20-minute call to understand your child's challenges, your concerns, and whether Medela is the right fit. No pressure, no commitment.

2

Learning profile assessment

Becs conducts a careful assessment to build a clear picture of your child's strengths and challenges before a programme begins.

3

Personalised programme

Sessions are planned around your child specifically. Each session builds on the last, always working towards clearly defined goals that you're involved in setting.

4

Progress & adaptation

Regular check-ins, progress reports for parents and schools, and an ongoing willingness to adapt as your child grows in confidence and ability.

Common questions

Answers to the questions we hear most

If something isn't answered here, please get in touch — we're always happy to talk through whether Medela is right for your family before you commit to anything.

If your child is struggling in school, avoiding reading or maths, showing signs of frustration, anxiety, or low confidence around learning — or has been flagged by a teacher — it's worth having a conversation. You don't need a formal diagnosis. Many of the children we work with come to us before any label has been given.
A tutor focuses on content — helping a child catch up on what they've missed. An educational therapist digs deeper — looking at how a child learns, why they're struggling, and addressing the underlying patterns. Becs does both, but always starts with the 'why'.
Sessions are typically one hour, once or twice a week, depending on the child's needs and family schedule. We'll discuss the right rhythm during the initial call and can adapt over time.
Yes. Becs works with children both in-person in Lisbon and online. Online sessions are just as effective for most children, and are a great option for families outside Lisbon or with busy schedules.
Medela works primarily with primary school age children — roughly Grades 1 to 6 (ages 6–12). If your child is younger or older, get in touch and we'll let you know if we can help or point you to someone who can.
Yes, where it's helpful. Becs has experience working alongside teachers and SEN coordinators at international schools across Lisbon. With your consent, she can communicate directly with school staff, attend meetings, and contribute to support plans.
Yes — they're designed with learning differences in mind. Clear fonts, uncluttered layouts, chunked tasks, and a multisensory approach. They work well for neurotypical children too, but the design specifically supports children who find traditional worksheets overwhelming.
Aldeia is a parent community co-founded by Becs and Jamille — a separate but connected initiative. While Medela focuses on direct support for children, Aldeia is for parents: a space for community, expert workshops, and practical guidance. You can join Aldeia independently of any Medela sessions.
